Early Education in the US

I’ve been thinking a lot about the role of government in early education- as the Presidential candidates talk about our littlest citizens. I’m fortunate to live in Massachusetts where we have the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care- which many states do not have. One of its most important goals is to provide high-quality FREE early education to all the 4 year old children who want it. Not surprisingly, Massachusetts leads the nation in 3rd grade reading proficiency rates.

But after reading “Starving the Future” yesterday, I see we are not doing enough, even here in this state.
Even if you only read the first page, you will see that we are lagging far behind other countries in giving our littlest citizens a sturdy foundation for learning and succeeding.
