So what does gentle touch, eye contact and smiling have to do with getting your baby ready for reading??
Gentle touch is important to your baby’s developing brain. Touch can soothe your baby and reduce stress.
Eye contact is important because babies are watching your mouth move as you speak. They are studying the way word-sounds look on your lips so they can learn your language … and language is the building block of reading.
Soon, babies will also begin to gaze into your eyes looking for more ways to bond and connect with you. Smiling back creates a powerful connection between you and your baby, a connection that is soon to become the most profound source of her learning.
So gently touch, make eye contact, smile … and become your baby’s most important teacher.
